The Carolina Hurricanes are the favourites to win the NHL Metropolitan Division. They of course won it last year by 6 points over the Rangers, and broke the 5 year run of the Capitals winning it.
Washington are generally 4th favourites this year and way down the list odds wise.
Five teams are generally expected to compete this year.

NHL Division Winner:
At the price, I’m happy to roll the dice on the New York Rangers to win the division.
I’m not too concerned about the loss of Strome. Getting in Trocheck should be great for them.
I do think the Hurricanes deserve to be favourites for the division. They are a well-oiled machine, often dominate the advanced metrics, and can be very consistent. But I felt like the Rangers were very good last year especially compared to previous, and haven’t had to ring in too many changes. Halak as a backup is great as well.
A couple of their youngsters haven’t blown anyone away yet but I think this is where we’ll really see guys like Lafreniere step up. This is a team that should have the confidence and belief, and at the price I’m happy to gamble on them.

Favourites to win it, and deserve to be. How brutal is that Pacioretty injury though? Burns should be a good fit for them. Produces similar to DeAngelo but you know – actually has defensive abilities. His physicality will be a game changer for them.
While I’m betting the Rangers – I can’t fault anyone for backing the Canes. They are a machine.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Ugh. The Penguins are so freaking boring. I thought we’d actually get some changes in the off-season but nope. It’s still Crosby, Malkin and Letang.
Petry will be a huge pickup for them. They’re going to be a solid team and make the playoffs. I just don’t think they have that spark to see them win the division, but it’ll likely be another 100+ point season for Pittsburgh.

Washington Capitals
Capitals are actually a team that have made some interesting changes in the off-season. The goalie department rang in some big changes That had to happen as they leaked a lot of goals last season and was the cause of them finishing 4th.
They’re starting the season with Wilson and Backstrom out though. Will we see Ovi actually regress this year?
I like their pickup of Strome a lot and I think he’ll have a good season. A lot depends on the goaltending department and how they perform in regard to how the Caps do this year, but I can’t see that being a big enough change to win the division.

New York Islanders
I forgot this team even existed. I don’t think I heard of them once during the off-season. Did they go to sleep and forget to set their alarms or something?
Trotz out. I think this is a team who is going to have some serious issues this year. I wouldn’t really say Chara is a big loss or anything. Romanov is a good pickup for sure, but yeah I am thinking this is going to be a year to bet against the Islanders often.

New Jersey Devils
It was a tough off season for the Devils, losing out on Johnny Hohkcey. I do like their pickup of Vanececk a lot though – I rate him. Some good pickups in defense, and Palat of course.
Probably the biggest pickup for them though is Andrew Brunette, and if he can get their power play going then that will be huge for the Devils. I see them finishing above the Islanders. I like the moves they have made, and I feel like they could be a surprise team this year.

Columbus Blue Jackets
Fun off-season for the Jackets and we’ll be looking forward to seeing Gaudreau and Laine for sure. But there are still other problems they haven’t really addressed especially on the defensive front.
One big issue there is Laine seems to have his issues off the ice a lot as well and if they are struggling, which I think they will, we could see more problems arise. I feel like the Jackets are going to have a rough year.

Philadelphia Flyers
It was heartbreaking for Flyers fans not being able to pick up Gaudreau. Relatively quite off season for the Flyers but I am excited about Torts. He’s a coach I really respect. I don’t think they’ll finish bottom of the division. But eh – I wouldn’t be betting them to win the Metro.
I do feel like this is a team where we’ll see the best out of them a bit later on after Torts gets rolling. DeAngelo is a decent pickup and should offer some improvement for them. Farabee and Ellis when they return to the squad should be a nice little boost.
